We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Director, Product Management on our Health Solutions team. As a Director, Product Management you will lead product management/strategy of coding, billing and payment portfolio, which includes CPT, CPT extensions and new products.


Advance coding, billing and payment (CBP) product portfolio

Define and lead growth strategy for the CBP content portfolio. Ensure opportunities are aligned to AMA mission, worthy of the AMA (likely to drive mass adoption) and have sustainability models compatible with business objectives. Lead opportunity assessment for new terminology and coding-related products.
Advise Health Solutions SVP and leadership team on CBP product portfolio opportunities. Develop business and financial models to generate business case for action. Set strategy and plans for product launch and market entry domestically and globally.
Develop portfolio and product strategies to guide product investment decisions (including product sunset) to position portfolio for sustained growth and impact.
Implement and manage product roadmaps. Inform and engage managerial and executive stakeholders to build alignment within the organization and with external stakeholders.
Work with leaders across Health Solutions and across AMA (IT, Legal, Finance, and Advocacy, in particular) to align product strategy with technical capabilities, economic models and compliance requirements.
Represent AMA at conferences and events in many capacities including as a speaker.
Facilitate development of an innovation pipeline: Develop the process and manage the execution of a high quality, repeatable opportunity assessment methodology and tools. Utilize deep understanding of emerging trends in the health care marketplace and the health IT industry to drive innovation.
Advance new product ideas through the AMA’s Innovation Launchpad approval process. Prepare supporting artifacts to obtain approvals and funding as needed.

Guide Product Design and Development

Oversee content and software development projects, including contracting, vendor management, risk management, program governance and budgets at 6- and 7-figure scale.
Produce forecasts and pro-forma financials for business opportunities. Collaborate with Marketing to deliver value messaging linked to the targeted markets and segments. Provide key inputs to enable marketing to develop Sales Enablement and Channel Enablement materials aligned to the new solutions’ value propositions. Manage creation of and oversee quality of product artifacts. Align product and go-to-market strategy.
Manage staff and contractors who define the requirements and specifications for new products and product enhancements to align them with key value proposition.
Collaborate with internal and external business partners to guide development and manage alignment of delivered product to specifications and market requirements.
Advise on market entry strategies, including go-to-market partnering opportunities. Evaluate direct and channel-based distribution along with financial and risk implications for HS solutions and develop recommendations for distribution strategies in targeted markets. Identify and assess strategic distribution opportunities in partnership with sales.
Manage Legacy Portfolio

Steward and maintain legacy CBP portfolio to sustain and grow mission impact and contribution margin. The portfolio includes licensed content, data files, APIs, mobile and online applications, books, terminology maps and other assets.
Leadership and Employee Development

Direct team of product managers, including staff development and performance management.
Allocate employees, contractors, and consultants among various projects to ensure capacity to meet product goals and timelines within budgets
Manage staff training and development.  Ensure that team is well versed in latest techniques and methodologies in data analysis, e.g., market sizing, business modeling, data standardization and cleansing. Coach the team on best practices on how to review analysis and provide actionable recommendations to stakeholders.
May include other responsibilities as assigned.


Advanced degree preferred.
7+ years working in a product management or equivalent role for a solution provider focused on the medical coding, billing or terminology market. Should have deep understanding of CPT, ICD and associated digital/technology-based products and solutions.
Minimum 3 years of experience in Product Management or Product Marketing required: experience implementing business process/scaling operations in product management or product marketing.
Minimum 3 years of experience managing professional staff required.
In-depth familiarity with health information management and health informatics strongly preferred.
Experience in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environments that favors decisive action; takes initiative and assumes additional responsibility without being asked.
Strong business acumen to convey recommendations and influence leadership. Excellent data synthesis skills to critically analyze and interpret market research and other data, to cultivate insights, and to apply those insights to develop business cases and plans.
Strong oral and written communications skills as demonstrated by thought leadership / publication and public speaking experience. Able to express complex business concepts effectively. Strong presentation skills required to evangelize products in the marketplace. Prepares written business documents that are professional.
International and/or global experience bringing products and solutions into new countries preferred. Demonstrated ability to identify nuances of markets/segments and identify how those distinctions create risks and opportunities for our solutions.
Proactively initiates, develops and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external team members to achieve results. Works well with people from many different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience and can influence a team toward a direction or recommendation based on data and insights. Must be able to quickly secure the trust of business stakeholders.
Able to cultivate and sustain strategic relationships with executives at key clients, federal government, associations and other collaborators.
Able to work with senior management across functions on complex projects and issues. Effectively builds business cases and advocates for multi-million-dollar investments in new products/programs.
Able to work long hours when necessary, attend educational events, and meet with vendors and high-level business leaders.
