Job Summary:

The Sustaining Engineer works closely with a cross functional team in improving the NanoString instrument and consumable products. The Sustaining Engineer is responsible for addressing product hardware issues by carrying out engineering and process changes as well as supporting other engineers in research and manufacturing. Key to the role will be a self-motivated and hands-on approach to collaboration, the timely and appropriate response to urgent matters, and the ability to apply sound judgment to problem resolution. The engineer is a product owner managing critical issues, identifying options, making proposals and gathering cross-company approvals and executing the changes to the operations pipeline.

Essential Functions:

Design critical components and subsystems to improve product performance and reliability
Assess the risk of engineering changes and mitigate risks through design
Create and perform verification activities including testing and analysis
Create engineering change orders (ECOs), including supporting documentation, CAD, and engineering drawings
Support and execute process improvements, lean activities, and team initiatives.
Manage CAPAs, NCRs, deviations, and other quality events relating to ECO activity in collaboration with the Quality team
Support external suppliers’ product end of life (EOL) cycles, redesigns, and other life cycle management activities
Participate in the optimization of product sourcing options, component and build costs, and manufacturing strategies
Lead efforts to address and resolve sustaining engineering issues with internal and external customers, including root cause analysis
Participate in evaluating new suppliers and contract manufacturers. Lead strategies for continuous cost and quality improvement programs
Proactively support company growth and improvement efforts. Lead and implement first article inspections and quality tests.

B.S and/or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
7+ years of experience working in product development, sustaining, or manufacturing engineering, preferably in the medical device industry
Specialized and expert skills working with SolidWorks CAD software and Product Data Management (PDM) systems or equivalent
Command and fluency in GD&T and tolerance analysis
Experience working within an enterprise document control system and administration
Experience with statistical analysis of complex data sets and design of experiments (DOE)
A practical aptitude for hands-on work with a variety of the following systems: electromechanical, optics, fluidics
Knowledge of fabrication techniques including plastics molding and microfluidics
Knowledge of quality control principles, business processes, management systems and common software applications
Experience and understanding of Supply Chain and Quality processes
Excellent communication skills, ability to clarify issues and reach consensus with an audience
Ability to listen and understand customers’ and others’ issues and concerns, both technical and operational
Ability to set goals for the team and achieve scheduled deadlines
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Demonstrated analytical and creative problem solving skills in a complex environment
